HRWC works to inspire change in attitudes and choices of residents in the Hiwassee River watershed by educating our members and the public about surface water quality and how it can be protected and improved. From walks on the River Walk with elementary school children to developing local, low cost erosion control training program for contractors, our goal is to show people of all ages that their actions can make a difference for water quality, both positively and negatively!
The Coalition is also part of the Regional Erosion and Sediment Control Initiative (RESCI) in southwestern NC. The purpose of RESCI is to develop a low cost, mountain-focused, erosion and sediment control curriculum that could be offered locally and consistently for grading contractors. The partners developed a daylong course that includes a hands-on field component and are currently working with local community colleges to offer it through their workforce development programs.
Our capacity to come into classrooms for educational activities varies throughout the year, but contact us and we’ll be happy to consider coming to the school. We can also provide classroom activities with instructions for teachers to provide hands-on water quality lessons themselves.
