HRWC's Adopt-A-Stream volunteer monitoring program provides the opportunity for citizens that value clean water to get involved in a hands-on way. All volunteers must be certified using the Georgia Adopt-A-Stream program methods to ensure data is consistently and accurately collected. Volunteers can choose any stream they would like to sample; however, the Coalition also has identified sites in Georgia and North Carolina where we would like to have data to help plan or monitor water quality improvement projects. Certified volunteers can check-out equipment from Georgia locations in Hiawassee, Young Harris, Blairsville, and in Hayesville and Murphy, NC.

HRWC and Georgia Adopt-A-Stream, are hosting two certification workshops for new volunteers on Saturday, April 6th at the Young Harris College Center for Outdoor Leadership. From 9:00-12:00 workshop participants will receive hands-on training in chemical monitoring, learning how to test stream samples for dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH and conductivity. Then from 12:30-3:00, a second workshop will teach bacterial monitoring protocols.

The workshops are offered FREE of charge to anyone 12 or older; however, advance registration is required and there is a maximum of 12 participants allowed in each workshop. Please register for the workshops in advance by email to Administrative & Outreach Coordinator, Raleigh Keagan at admin@hrwc.net or by phone: 828-837-5414. The deadline for registration is April 3, 2019.
