On Friday, January 18th from 11:00-3:00, HRWC and Trout Unlimited will host a tree planting workday along a section of Davis Creek in Cherokee County, NC adjacent to Nantahala National Forest. This part of the stream in the headwaters of Davis Creek was historically cleared and mowed to the water’s edge. The current landowner wants to return the streamside area to its natural forested condition. Planting native trees and shrubs along streams improves water quality, stream temperature and wildlife habitat both for the immediate area and downstream waters. There are over 500 native trees and shrubs planned for the site, including beautiful ornamental natives.

Volunteers are welcome to participate for the whole workday or for only an hour or two during the specified block of time. No prior tree planting experience is necessary. Instruction, tools, gloves, snacks and water will be provided, as needed. Please RSVP to Tony Ward if you plan to participate so that he can provide directions and access instructions: restore@hrwc.net or call 828-837-5414. In case of unsuitable weather, volunteers will be notified and the workday will be rescheduled during the last week of February.
